Overview

In 1954, the Blood Bank of Delmarva was established in the Delmarva region as a private, not for profit agency to collect, test, and distribute blood products. Today, the Blood Bank of Delmarva is a division of New York Blood Center and is among the nation's premium providers of blood products and services and an integral part of the Delmarva community's health care system. As of October, 2019, the Blood Bank of Delmarva employs approximately 169 full- and part-time employees. Our employees are committed to the Blood Center's mission of providing a safe and adequate blood for patients within our community. This position is responsible for performing all aspects of therapeutic apheresis procedures on both adult and pediatric population in a mobile setting as per NYBC standard operating procedures and policies. 

 

Schedule:

The Therapeutic Apheresis RN position receives assignments working a varied schedule to different hospitals in the DE/MD/VA/PA/NJ area weekly at differing locations. On-call schedule also required when needed. Travel required. Company car will be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all therapeutic apheresis procedures independently by identifying required criteria, obtaining consent, performing patient physical assessment and documentation.
  • Provides care and follow-up instructions related to access and reports any abnormal findings to appropriate personnel.
  • Administers blood products and medications during procedures per physician’s orders, calculating and reconstitution of medication related to procedure.
  • Performs pre/post procedure physical assessment and reports abnormal findings to appropriate physician as applicable.
  • Performs assessment and intervention in response to adverse reactions/events; blood product reactions and emergencies related to procedure.
  • Completes all required forms/ electronic record.
  • Operates equipment related to performing procedures and troubleshoot alarms and reports abnormal findings.
  • Performs quality control of all equipment used.
  • Provides education to patients, family and hospital personnel as it relates to therapeutic apheresis, specific procedures and disease entities.
  • Maintains inventory of mobiles, reports supply needs and assists with on-site par levels.
  • Scan in work hours using the current Time Keeping System, completes monthly expense reports accurately and in a timely manner as per departmental policy.
  • Makes recommendations to improve business unit operations.
  • Provides technical expertise and consultation to NYBC internal teams.
  • Participates in continuing education, contributes to medical literature in apheresis, attends relevant meetings.
  • Perform procedures for clinical trials or other investigational studies.
  • Any related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Associate of Science Degree in Nursing plus three years of clinical experience in medical/surgery, emergency or telemetry.

OR

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing plus one year of clinical experience in medical/surgery, emergency or telemetry.

OR

  • 3 years combination of education, training and experience equivalent to that listed above has supplied the necessary knowledge, skills and experience to perform the essential functions of the job.

 

Competencies:

  • (1) Competent in three apheresis procedures.
  • (2) Competent in three out of five of the vascular accesses (PIV, Vortex, AVF, AV Graft, Bard apheresis port) within one year of hire.

 

Licenses/Certifications:

  • BBD: RN Licensure in one of the states of operation upon hire (DE/NJ/PA), and licensure in all three states of operation within one year of appointment exceptions are left up to department discretion) Valid Driver’s License. BCLS Certification.

 

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practice of nursing.
  • Knowledge of blood product administration.
